SUGARING VS. WAXING
Many of my clients ask me what the difference is between waxing and sugaring. Even though it might not seem like there is much difference between the two methods, there is a big difference. I often tell my new clients that if they’ve never tried sugaring Toronto, which is an old way to get rid of hair, they’re in for a treat.
What is sugaring then? Well, it’s actually a very simple recipe: just boil sugar, water, and lemon juice to make a paste. You could even make it at home, but I wouldn’t suggest that you do. A client once told me that she had wanted to try it by herself but didn’t have the guts to turn it off. She waited for hours before realizing that the only way to get rid of it was to get in the shower and let it melt away. My advice is to leave it to the pros.
How we put on the sugar is different from how we put on the wax. We pull the hair back and flick the sugar off in the direction that the hair would grow. Because of this, our clients get fewer ingrown hairs and see less hair growing back. This is because less hair breaks and the sugar can reach the second layer of hair growth. THE MIX
The oldest way to get rid of hair is by using sugar. It’s been around for thousands of years! To make sugar paste, you only need three things: sugar, water, and lemon juice. On the other hand, wax is made from a mix of things that come from the process of making petroleum. Not good for the environment and maybe not good for your skin.
THE APPLICATION
Both are put on the skin and pull hair out of its root. Wax has to be heated before it can be put on the skin, which can burn it. Sugar, on the other hand, can be put on the skin at body temperature and will never burn it. Wax sticks to almost everything, including your skin, which can cause it to tear. Sugar will only stick to skin and hair that are already dead, and it won’t tear the skin.
Wax is put on in the direction hair grows and pulled off in the opposite direction, which can break hair. Sugar, on the other hand, is put on in the opposite direction and pulled off in the direction hair grows, which keeps hair from breaking.
WHAT IS NEEDED?
One of the best things about sugaring Toronto is that you don’t have to have short hair. Waxing Toronto needs hair to be 1/4 inch long, but sugaring Toronto only needs hair to be 1/8 inch long. This means you don’t have to wait as long between appointments, and if you can get rid of the hair when it’s shorter, you’re more likely to catch it while it’s growing. When a hair is cut while it is still getting blood, the follicle wall collapses and the hair can’t grow back. Because of this, the density goes down over time!
WHAT IS WAXING OR WAXING TORONTO?
Waxing Toronto is done by putting a wax (usually a hard wax) on an area of skin and pulling it off in the opposite direction. This pulls the hair out of the follicle. It’s a good idea to ask your salon what’s in the wax they use… Some waxes are all natural, some have essential oils or other ingredients (I like Azulene), and some have chemicals (which I try to avoid).
IS WAXING PAINFUL?
Yes – it’s painful! You pull out the hair from the root, and because the strip is pulled in the opposite direction of the hair growth, it can be pretty painful.
Waxing has both pros and cons.
It lasts a long time and works great no matter what kind of hair you have… Even hair that is very thick and coarse works well with wax. Waxing hurts, but the results are smooth and last a long time, and it always works.
WHAT IS SUGARING Or SUGARING TORONTO?
Sugaring is an all-natural method of care. There are only three things in the warm (not hot) paste: lemon, sugar, and water. There are no chemicals or cloth strips used, so it is better for the environment than waxing. I just learned that sugaring Toronto can help you avoid ingrown hairs because it gets rid of the live skin cells that stop your hair from growing in the right direction.
IS SUGARING PAINFUL?
It does hurt! Also, because the sugar-lemon mixture is warm and not hot, it is gentler than waxing. Also, when you wax, the hair is pulled out in the opposite direction of how the follicle grows, but when you sugar, the hair is pulled in the natural direction of how the follicle grows. It’s also less painful than waxing because the paste doesn’t stick to your skin; it only sticks to your hair.
Still, you are pulling hair out, so I want to be clear that it hurts a lot, especially if you are doing a sensitive area like the bikini line. It hurts less than waxing, but a lot more than shaving. The level of pain is more like when you tweeze a lot of hairs at once.

There is a debate, and both sides have good and bad points. If your hair is thick or coarse, waxing Toronto will work better for you. If that’s not the case, sugaring Toronto can be more effective because it breaks hair less and can pull out more hair. From what I’ve seen, the results are pretty much the same: no matter what, hair grows back. I found that sugaring works better and even gets the tiniest baby hairs. For me, waxing lasts about four weeks, and sugaring lasts about five. It’s not much, and for me, it’s more about the experience than the result (sugaring is so much gentler, and I love that it’s organic!)

SO WHAT DO YOU THINK? SUGARING OR WAXING?
This depends on your hair and skin types, for sure. If you have coarse body hair, waxing Toronto is the best way to get rid of it. But if you haven’t tried sugaring yet, I think you should! I really like that it’s all natural and clean… I like that it is warm rather than hot. If your skin is sensitive, sugaring Toronto is the best way to go… When I sugar instead of wax, my skin is definitely less red.
I’ll be honest: I don’t think I’ll go back to waxing now that I’ve tried sugaring Toronto, unless it’s an emergency and the salon doesn’t offer it. Again, I like that it’s all natural and I know exactly what’s in it.
