Our first health services listings
One of the first things we ever did as an organisation was sharing your recommendations for safe healthcare providers.
You told us (and each other) where to go for hormones. You shared which GPs were respectful of your gender. You mentioned which laser hair removal clinic you went to. You also told us where you got your binder. You said which rongoā Māori you were into.
So we built a web page and listed services. As it got bigger, we tried separate pages for different regions. But in many cases, you didn’t care which region services were in. You told us you would go to any region, if it meant getting the care you needed.
So we thought about how to give you a full list. We aimed to avoid creating a huge wall of text on a web page.
Searchable database
In 2019, we swapped our web page of listings for a searchable database of trans-friendly providers. Two trans women wrote the code. It let us search by category. It was amazing!
Within a couple of years, we set out to get more in depth information. We asked providers to tell us what services they offer. We added more of this information to the database. Then we realized it was making the database long and cluttered. We needed a new way to show you the information.
New and improved database
In 2023, we asked Rainbow Wellbeing Legacy Fund to help us overhaul the database. We are very grateful that they said yes!
We investigated different options, built a prototype with different software, and added new recommendations to it. We released it at the end of 2023.
In 2024, we heard feedback about the prototype from trans people and services across the country.
We listened to your ideas, and what you needed from the database. Everyone loved the star rating system, but the search function wasn’t great. It was difficult to find the right type of service in the right region. What you wanted was to search by the type of service and the region, like the old databse did. And you also wanted lots of information.
So we got back to work, and here’s what we’ve done – the new transgender healthcare services database.
We hope it’s easy to use, and has all the information you need!! Every listing links to the service’s website too, so you can investigate there as well.

The services that register with us (free) can provided a lot more useful information in their listings.
