The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) recently released the results of their annual Global Aesthetic Survey, which lists the most popular cosmetic procedures, as well as the countries performing those procedures.
The United States and Brazil continue to perform the most cosmetic procedures, with the US performing 17.9%, and Brazil performing 10.7%, for a total of 28.6% of the global number. They are followed by Japan, falling quite a bit behind at 4.8%; Italy, at 4.1%; and Mexico coming in fifth place at 3.9%.
The countries on the list that perform the fewest cosmetic procedures are South Africa, Romania, and Lebanon.

The world’s most popular cosmetic procedures
According to a media release, Breast Augmentation is still the world’s most popular cosmetic procedure, accounting for 15.8% or surgical procedures, followed by Liposuction (14%), Eyelid Surgery (12.9%), Rhinoplasty (7.6%) and Abdominoplasty (7.4%). The least popular cosmetic surgery in 2016 was penile enlargement, which also saw the largest decrease in number of procedures at -28%.
Botulinum Toxin Injectables remain the most popular non-surgical procedures, with 4,627,752 procedures performed, a 7% increase over 12 months.
Labiaplasty showed the largest rise in number of procedures in 2016, up a frankly stunning 45% from 2015. This was followed by the Lower Body lift, which increased by 29%; the Upper Body Lift and Breast Augmentation using Fat Transfer, both demonstrating equal growth at 22%; and the Buttock Lift increasing by 20%.
Women continued to make up the majority of cosmetic patients in 2016, accounting for 20,362,655 – or 86.2% of – cosmetic procedures worldwide. The five most popular procedures requested by women are Breast Augmentation (Silicone Implant), Liposuction, Eyelid Surgery, Abdominoplasty and Breast Lift.
Men accounted for 13.8% of cosmetic procedures, with 3,264,254 performed worldwide. The top five procedures requested by men are Eyelid Surgery, Gynecomastia, Rhinoplasty, Liposuction and Hair Transplant.
The ISAPS report broke down top procedures by country as well.

Back to the most popular non-surgical procedures, separate recent research bears out these findings. According to the American Med Spa Association, 100 surgeons, doctors, nurses, dermatologists, dentists and practice managers in the UK were asked which non-surgical treatments are most common among women.
“The practitioners studied mentioned 22 treatments but two dominated; Botox, cited by 90% of practitioners and dermal fillers nominated by 86%. Two fifths (42%) said chemical peels are a top treatment among female patients, laser hair removal was suggested by 36%, teeth whitening by a third (33%) and non-surgical facelifts by 31%. “
Six per cent also said that vaginal rejuvenation is the treatment they are most commonly asked for, and this group said the procedure makes up the bulk of their business.
