As manscaping becomes mainstream, you may start to see an increase in your male waxing clients. And with that comes a whole new set of concerns…mostly because of the unknown. So how do you convince your male clients they too can reap the rewards of longer-lasting hair removal through waxing? The more they know, the better the experience.
Male clients may seem hesitant at first so start by talking them through what to expect. Some things you can review with them prior in an effort to put their mind at ease include:
- Leave the removal to the pros. Let them know it doesn’t matter what they look like when they come in, only how they look when they leave. Doing any sort of clean up prior to their appointment can affect the overall wax experience because hair that is too short will not grip the wax effectively (and it will hurt more).
- Keep it clean. Remind them to skip that workout, please. Showering before their appointment is okay, as are lotions and deodorants, but avoid being too oiled up and no self-tanners or body sprays.
- Before and aftercare matters. Something they should do before and after, exfoliating is crucial to the perfect wax. Nothing prepares the skin the way a soothing liquid body wash and exfoliating gloves The process ensures their skin is free of dead skin cells, and that both the skin and hair are soft prior to waxing. Regular exfoliation also encourages proper hair growth and can eliminate ingrown hairs from popping up post-wax.
- Yes, they might breakout, and yes, they can prevent it. Certain areas of the body, especially those that men will want waxed such as the chest, back, face, etc., and certain skin types are more prone to breakouts and bumps post-wax. A blemish control product applied twice a day post-wax will help keep the hair follicle clear, suppress bacteria, and jump-start the skin’s healing process.
- Obviously, men tend to have more and thicker hair than women so their appointment may last longer. Let them know that the process is no different for men or women, male clients just often require a little extra time.
- Start small. If they are first-timers, suggest not starting with a full chest hair wax or a male Brazilian. Instead, have them come in for a beard clean up, ear, or brow wax appointment first so they are comfortable with you and the process.
