Sorry, please use a different browser. Closing first quarter economic growth rate of 1.3%… Highest level for over 2 years

The first quarter economic report card has been released.
The real GDP growth rate was 1.3%, the highest in over two years, and private consumption also improved significantly.
This year, it’s not a bad start.

The real gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate in the first quarter was 1.3% compared to the previous quarter.
This is the highest level in 2 years and 3 months since the fourth quarter of 2021.
It exceeded market expectations and escaped the 0% growth range in five quarters.
This is due to a rebound in domestic demand, which had been slow, amid continued strong exports.
Exports continued to grow by 0.9%, led by IT items.
Building construction and civil engineering both recovered, with construction investment increasing by 2.7%, and consumption also increased by 0.7% and 0.8% in the government and private sectors, respectively.
Exports and domestic demand contributed equally to overall growth.
“The recovery has widened compared to the previous quarter as consumption of clothing and restaurants increased due to a recovery in consumer sentiment and more outdoor activities. Construction investment has increased due to favorable weather conditions and an increase in completions build on some business sites … .”
However, the Bank of Korea pointed out that it is difficult to say that private consumption has entered a full recovery period and that concerns about the financing of real estate and PF projects remain.
Due to Middle East risks, international oil price uncertainty is increasing and supply chain disruption is also a concern.
“We will carefully examine external instability factors, especially supply chain risks in the high-tech industry, in preparing and promoting a response strategy to the reorganization of the global supply chain before the implementation of the Supply Chain Stabilization Act.”
Due to the ‘extraordinary growth’ in the first quarter, the government is likely to raise its growth forecast for this year from the previous 2.1%.
The ASEAN + 3 macroeconomic research institute forecasts Korea’s annual growth rate at 2.3%, and global investment banks such as UBS recently raised their forecasts by 0.1 to 0.3 percentage points.
